Team EI Survey

What is the Team EI Survey and how can it help a leader build a more emotionally intelligent team?

The Team EI Survey is an online, anonymous assessment that takes about 20 minutes for each team member to complete. Each norm in the model is assessed via several items that are averaged to produce an overall score. The report provides visuals of the average of all team member’s responses, and their range. This helps identify where development work should be focused, including opportunities for quickly improving team communication and interactions. For example, outlier responses that members may otherwise be reluctant to share typically represent useful information for stimulating innovation and improvement.

We developed the first version of the Team EI Survey in 1999, for research purposes. Almost immediately leaders asked to use the survey for team assessment and development. Since then, the survey has evolved into a highly user-friendly tool for helping teams thrive,

What benefits can the Team EI Survey provide to leaders and teams?

For more than two-decades, over a thousand of team leaders and coaches have used the Team EI Survey to help improve the performance of teams.

As my colleagues and I learned by using the survey with teams in a dozen Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500 companies —and other teams in smaller organizations — the survey stimulates productive discussions about what currently works well in a team and what normative changes can help the team achieve its goals. Discussions typically include what the survey shows them is working well in their current culture and what is not. Also, the identification of new, more emotionally intelligent, routines that can better support team goal achievement, and team member well-being.

The specificity of the Team EI Survey allows a team to develop a detailed action plan for change and to efficiently enact those changes. We recommend using the survey periodically to track team development over time.

The Team EI Survey supports improvements in areas like the following:

  • Higher levels of team member engagement

  • Development of a proactive approach to conflict

  • Increased team member alignment around goals and priorities

  • More efficient use of time and energy in meetings

  • Increased individual and team resilience and adaptability

  • Higher levels of team creativity and innovation

  • Less unacceptable team member behavior
